PREMIER Soccer League chairman Irvin
Khoza says what makes the PSL one of the top seven premier leagues in
the world is that the standard keeps improving.
Speaking on Friday at a media briefing to announce the new
Absa Premiership quarterly prize money structure, Khoza urged South
Africans to gear themselves for a more exciting and entertaining soccer
display in the PSL.The new structure will see the league season divided into four quarters with the log leaders of each quarter earning R1.4-million, in addition to the R10-million first prize awaiting the overall league winners.
"The Absa Premiership will from this season be divided into four quarters. Quarter one will have eight fixtures, quarter two seven, quarter three and quarter four seven."
Khoza said there were no longer any guaranteed results as the 16 clubs had been reinforcing their squads with quality players to challenge for the four trophies on offer.
The PSL is gradually becoming the home of choice for top players following the return to South Africa of Benni McCarthy.
Besides McCarthy, other big-name players back in the PSL after doing well in various European leagues are Aaron Mokoena, Calvin Kadi, Matthew Booth and Delron Buckley.
The past two seasons were electrifying, with supporters having to wait until the last matches to see who walks away the Premiership title and R10-million first prize.
Orlando Pirates won back-to-back league titles and are favoured to make it three in a row this season but must expect stiff opposition from clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Platinum Stars and Bidvest Wits.
"The Absa Premiership has given renewed meaning to the saying, it ain't over until the fat lady sings," said Khoza, who has repeatedly rubbished reports that there was no sponsorship crisis at the PSL.
Last week the PSL announced the renewal of the top-eight competition with MTN which was followed by confirmation that Absa will continue backing the league. They are expected to agree new Nedbank Cup and Telkom Knockout sponsorship deals soon.
