The
first recorded Tanzanian Lady Chancellor appointed for the largest
students registering university in East Africa and the SADC region - the
Open University of Tanzania - Dr Asha Rose Migro was on Friday
treated to a special welcome by the university’s dons , students and
residents of Kinondoni in Dar es Salaam wishing her every success in her
new leadership position.
Amid applause from the audience she said
in her maiden speech to the university audience: “When the President of
the United Republic of Tanzania, H. E. Dr. Jakaya Kikwete, in a pleasant
surprise named me Chancellor of the OUT, I simply jumped with delight!
For I knew this appointment would take me right back to academia! I
will remain ever grateful to him for the trust and confidence in me.”
She paid glowing tribute to the outgoing
Chancellor, Dr.John Malecela describing him as “Former Prime Minister
and Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, a seasoned
politician and an eminent diplomat, ” who has held the university’s
chancellorship for twenty years since its establishment until Dr.
Asha-Rose Migro’s appointment by the President.
On some of the achievements made by the
OUT, the new Chancellor said: “Over the years, the university has
stretched its tentacles to every region in the country where today it
boasts 29 regional and five coordination centres in the United Republic,
as well as in neighbouring Kenya, Namibia and Rwanda.”
In his remarks at the event, the outgoing
Chancellor of OUT, Dr John Samwel Malecela commended all the OUT
dons, students and other workers at the university for their
contribution in the achievements registered so far. “Let me take this
opportunity to congratulate the founder Vice Chancellor of OUT Professor
Geoffrey Mmari and his team for their resilience during the
establishment of OUT in view of being able to work diligently and with
dedication even when OUT was renting various premises, and at times it
had to shift from renting one public building to another in search for a
permanent home, prior to moving to the current temporary headquarters
at Kinondoni in 2001.
In his remarks at the event, the chairman
of the OUT Council, Prof. Samwel Wangwe welcomed the new Chancellor at
the OUT Kinondoni temporary headquarters. He also thanked the outgoing
Chancellor Dr. John Malecela for “guiding this institution that has
benefited tremendously from his rich experience and knowledge of the
history of our country.”
OUT has so far a total of 80,000 students, on the basis of remarks by the OUT leadership at the welcoming event.
