WOMEN CHALLENGED TO PURSUE HIGHER ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Dr Fenella Mukangara, Information, Youths and Culture minister
............
Information, Youths and Culture minister Dr Fenella Mukangara has challenged women to pursue higher academic qualifications to fight prejudice.
Mukangara made the appeal at a special beauty contest for Miss Excellence of the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) held at the University's headquarters in Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam over the weekend.

She said like men, women should vie for academic excellence uncompromisingly, saying the world is in an era "Where beauty alone does not make sense" even in beauty contest.

The minister said the country had many talented women who can reach highest academic standards but for one reason or another have failed to make it.

She said one of the reasons that prevented talented women from realising their full potential academically was chauvinism where some men make final decisions on every family matter.

She said worse still even today there are men who prevent their wives from registering for higher academic studies, threatening to divorce them if they dared defy them.

"I appeal to the Tanzanian community in general to bury such uncivilised behaviour, which is outdated," she said.

Dr Fenella called on OUT to find out how many students have been denied opportunity to join universities and other high learning institutions in the country due to men’s chauvinism.

The minister commended OUT for its achievements that including availing education to qualified women and men of different age groups contrary to wrong perception from some people that those who were registered for higher education were people with grey hair.

"I have been heartened to be told that among the aims of the Miss Excellence OUT is to increase students’ registration for various courses availed by the university in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to which Tanzania is one of the signatories," she said.

"I take this opportunity to highly commend the management of OUT for considering to avail such awards to winners of Miss Excellence OUT," she said; cautioning that "Beauty alone without education does not make sense.”
