Thousands of people being served by Frelimo District Hospital in Iringa have reasons to smile after a state of the art rain water harvesting facility was commissioned in the area.
The model facility costing approximately Tzs 50 Million has been constructed through funding of EABL Foundation and Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) and will benefit over 100,000 area residents.
Speaking when she commissioned the facility, Iringa District Commissioner, Dr. Leticia Wariobaa expressed her gratitude to SBL for guaranteeing availability of water at the hospital, saying this was one of the key elements for a sustainable community.
“I am glad that this facility will provide the community with the much-needed resource and wish to thank SBL and EABL Foundation for their efforts”, she acknowledged.
She further revealed that the project would go a long way in reducing the impact of water borne diseases which was prevalent in the fast expanding area.
The rainwater harvesting facility project was launched during the climax of world water day that was nationally commemorated at Samaora Memorial Stadium in Iringa.
SBL was the official sponsor of the water week whose climax was graced by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.
This year alone Serengeti Breweries Limited has allocated more 300,000,000 shillings on water; of which 100,000,000 million for the water week sponsorship of media and communication, branding material, t-shirts, caps, brochures, booklets, certificates, posters and fliers.
And the remaining 200,000,000 shillings were set aside for water and sanitation projects in Iringa , Mwanza, Moshi and Dar es salaam.
Also present during the commissioning ceremony was SBL’s Corporate Relations Director, Teddy Mapunda who revealed that the business was committed to working with communities in providing long term solutions through provision of clean, sustainable water.
“As a company, SBL recognizes that water is a basic need and an important catalyst for both economic and social development of the country. Finding sustainable solutions to the problems of our people underscores our commitment to the communities in which we operate”. Temeke and Mawenzi hospitals would certainly be commissioned soon as constructions are being finalised.
Last year, SBL/EABL Foundation commissioned water and sanitation project in Mkuranga and was part of corporate companies and NGO’s that came together to improve water at Amana hospital in Dar es salaam.
Serengeti Breweries Limited and EABL foundation invested 384.6 Million on Mkuranga Water project to benefit more than 250,000 people.
