DEPARTMENT OF FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM IS PRESENTING THE ETHNOMUSICOLOGY SYMPOSIUM FROM 31ST JULY TO 4TH AUGUST 201

The highly successful, annual International Ethnomusicology Symposium presented by the Department of Fine and Performing Arts of the University of Dar es Salaam will be held from 31st July to 4th August 2012. Over 150 scholars, musicians, students and others interested in the study of the music traditions of East, Central and Southern Africa will participate. The Symposium will take place in the facilities of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts on the main campus of the University. All interested people are very welcome to attend. Admission to all events of the Symposium is free.

The Ethnomusicology Symposium, now in its 6th year is truly an international event. Besides lectures and music performances from Tanzania, presenters will be coming from Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Sudan, Zimbabwe, the United States, Austria, Canada, Italy and South Korea. Keynote lectures will be presented by noted Profs. Gerhard Kubik who has studied and written about the music traditions of Tanzania since 1960 and Prof. Frank Gunderson who has researched historical music traditions and specifically the music of the Wasukuma and has published widely in these areas. Mr.LudumoMagangane, well-known South African choral director will lead evening choral workshops and will also give a presentation on choral transcriptions.

The official opening will be at 9.30 a.m. on 1st August. Presentations will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily (1st-4th August) with evening choral workshops from 6 to 9 p.m. (31st July - 2nd August). Agrand Symposium Concert will be presented on 3rd August at 7 p.m. in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts.

The Symposium is presented through very generous support from the Goethe Institut in Dar es Salaam, The Swiss Programme for International Development, the United States Embassy in Dar es Salaam and the Tanzania Cigarette Company.
