President Jakaya Kikwete will on Wednesday grace the 2012 Development Symposium at Karimjee Hall in Dar es Salaam.

Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Professorial Chair in Development at the
University of Dar es Salaam, Prof Delphin Rwegasira, told journalists in
the city that the main objective of the conference is to promote
development among key stakeholders.
“This is also an important activity intended to honour Mwalimu Julius
Nyerere’s efforts towards faster national development and Third World
progress,” he said.
The two-day meeting under the theme “Enhancing Human Capital and
Productivity for Faster Development in Tanzania” is expected to bring
together about 200 participants including academicians, civil society,
representatives of government and development partners.
Prof Rwegasira mentioned papers to be discussed at the assembly as the
Political Economy of Growth and Distribution, the Challenges of
Preserving Macroeconomic Stability, Factors explaining productivity and
Approaches to Education and Skills Growth.
Others are the Promotion of Science and Technology for Development and
Human and Resources for Agricultural and Mineral Development. “A
concluding panel will focus specifically on refining and sharpening the
developmental role of the state for the way forward,” said Prof
Rwegasira.
He pointed out that the professional papers prepared by senior
academicians and policy analysts were aimed at addressing burning issues
revolving around different sectors which would contribute to the
national development. “We want to create a simple model of thinking on
our economic development for the better life of the general public,” he
said.
The Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Chair in Development is one of the three
university wide chairs located in the UDSM’s College of Arts and Social
Sciences within Department of the Economics. The chair aims at
spearheading basic and applied research in social development from
economic perspective.
