A renowned historical site- Bagamoyo district in
Coast Region is apparently underway to be declared a new city by next
year, Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office-Environments, Dr
Terezia Huvisa has revealed.
This is due to the ever increasing number of investors, with over 20 foreign investors including Chinese who have expressed interest to invest in the district, something that will boost its economy and attract more people including tourists.
Dr Huvisa made the revelation over the weekend when laying a foundation stone at the Bethel Retreat Centre which is under the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) in Bagamoyo.
“Bagamoyo will be declared a new city in January next year,” she said, warning residents to avoid building structures within 60 metres from the demarcated area of the Indian Ocean.
“This will help residents avoid unnecessary demolitions of buildings by the city council or the National Environment Council,” she added.
The minister insisted that the government will not tolerate those whi will go against the rules and build structures along the shoreline of the Indian Ocean.
She encouraged those living close to the shore to plant trees which will protect them from intense waves that normally cause severe impacts.
Dr Huvisa also called upon schools and institutions to start planting trees saying that the world at large is undergoing major climatic changes such as the melting of ice in the north and south poles and excessive carbon dioxide which can be neutralised by forests.
Meanwhile, the ELCT Head, Bishop Dr Alex Malasusa called upon Tanzanians including government officials to cooperate with the police force in maintaining peace in the country by avoiding causing chaos which can enrage the police to act violently.
Bishop Malasusa said peace will not be achieved by simply dispersing lots of policemen in the streets but through respect towards one another.
ELCT have acquired 121 hectares of land worth 46m/-, located at Chasimba in Bagamoyo to set up the Bethel Retreat Centre which will be used for vacation purposes by church leaders during their holidays.
The centre will also be used by different scholars to conduct researches as libraries will also be located at the premises.
The centre will later help build a dispensary, vocational training institutes and a police station in the area which will serve the surrounding community.
