Botswana’s mining giant Debswana has been given the green light to continue using surveillance cameras in toilets used by employees in an effort to foil diamond theft.

Gaborone High Court Judge Isaac Lesetedi said theft of diamond had the potential to negatively impact the country’s economy.

Forty of the mine workers were each demanding $630, 000 compensation from the company for ‘invasion of their privacy’ after discovering the spy cameras.
The aggrieved workers said they feared that their images could be used secretly in pornographic films.

They also complained that the cameras were also recording audio, an allegation they failed to prove.
According to the court, there is a single camera in each of the toilets directly over the seat. The cameras were installed in 2000 after intelligence reports that some people were using the toilets to hide diamonds in their anal cavities.

“Whenever invasion of privacy of this nature is mentioned in a society such as ours a lot of uniformed emotional outrage arises. It is only when a full picture has emerged that a more balanced reaction may emerge,” Mr Lesetedi said.

Apparently, a mine employee admitted to hiding diamonds in their body while in the toilet in 2007.

The footage from the cameras was reportedly streamed directly three security officers who had access to the monitoring system.
Other security measures at the mine include forbidding employees from handshakes, or covering mouths when sneezing.
