Dar es Salaam. President Jakaya
Kikwete was among Tanzanians who issued messages of condolence following
the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Tuesday.
Speaking
to reporters at the State House in the city, Kikwete said the world has
lost an exceptional leader who, according to him, fought for poor
people throughout his leadership.
“Although everyone will die, but Mr Chavez’s death was untimely due to his visionary leadership to liberate the poor,” he said.
University
of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) political science and public administration
lecturer, Mr Bashiru Ally, said Chavez’s death has occurred at a time
when the world is searching for an alternative system to capitalism.
“We
all know that Mr Chavez was against globalisation and environmental
degradation under capitalism…he had a vision to change the world just
like Mahatma Gandhi and Kwame Nkurumah, ” he said.
For
his part, Mr Hamad Salim, a lecturer with the Open University of
Tanzania said the death was a big blow to socialist countries, as Mr
Chavez was an ‘icon’ in the modern socialism bloc led by China,
Venezuela and Cuba.
Mr Paul Loisulie also from
the UDSM said President Chavez would be remembered for his ability to
use the poor as his political capital.
Chavez died after battling cancer for two years. He led the south American country for 14 years.
