THE government is implementing various
projects in the new region of Katavi to make it more attractive to local
and international investors.
That is why religious denominations should support the government's
move by investing in the education sector, so that the region gets more
higher learning institutions other than the Open University of Tanzania
(OUT).
Detailing the various development projects in the new region during
the colourful inauguration ceremony in Mpanda township, Prime Minister
Mizengo Pinda said the National Housing Corporation (NHC) is
constructing 150 houses and some modern storey buildings.
He noted that the Public Pension Fund (PPF) will construct more than
400 housing units in Katavi, urging youths to use employment
opportunities available with all the developmental activities taking
place. Other development projects underway in the new region include
electricity.
The government has set aside funds to purchase two generators that
will produce 5MW for Mpanda areas that will include the new region. Mr
Pinda noted that there is also a possibility of using Lwega River for
hydropower generation of about 5MW and a dam that will later be
constructed in the area will generate 30MW.
Speaking about infrastructure, Mr Pinda said many of the roads are in
various stages of construction, noting that by 2015 all the roads of
about 11,000km will be completed. Mr Pinda said development in the new
Katavi region will only be achieved through hard work, discipline,
harmony and unity. "We must change, the new region is basically an
agricultural areas, and for those to be achieved we must work hard in
agriculture to beat hunger and poverty," he explained.
Alongside working hard, Mr Pinda noted that there should be a
leadership that puts the public's interests ahead of their own, and must
respect and love the people who put them in power. "We must respect and
love those who put us in power, we must not be greedy and gather wealth
for ourselves with little regard to the well-being of those who elect
us. We should always be ready to be criticized," Mr Pinda urged.
He ordered leaders to stay in their areas of duty and not in town, as
it has been the case, directing Regional Commissioners to forward names
of those who will not stay in their areas of posting. On his part,
Vice-President Dr Mohammed Gharib Bilal said the government's intention
of making Katavi a new regions is to bring leaders closer to the people.
"Our main goal is to bring development, we want Katavi to be a
gravitating centre, attracting people to the region, and eventually
achieve the goal of development," he explained.
