Open University of Tanzania (OUT) has been commended for being exemplary in the provision of affordable higher education within and outside the country.
The commendation was made in Dar es Salaam over the weekend by the Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa when launching various on-going activities to mark the university’s 20th anniversary scheduled to reach its climax on October 27th, this year
He said the university has been playing a vital role in broadening avenues for the majority to access higher education.
The minister also launched the Board of the Open University Consultancy Bureau (OCB), Open and Distance Learning Centre for Good Governance, Media Education, and French Courses.
"All these activities are indeed a result of OUT working closely with the government”, he said.
Underscoring the importance of education in development endeavors, Kawambwa said the contribution of higher education to economic development is well elaborated in all key national policy documents including the five year Development Plan, National Development Vision 2025, National Strategy for Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction (MKUKUTA) and the Education Sector Development Programme (ESDP).
He said, for instance the Tanzania Development Vision 2025 sees higher education as a strategic tool in steering and transforming the country's economy to attain a middle income status by the year 2025."
Kawambwa called on universities to increase the number of students in their enrollments as the number of students who completed Form Six in February, 2012 has increased to 44,212 compared to 44,039 in the previous year.
Meanwhile, the former First Lady, Maria Nyerere expressed her appreciation for being among those graced to witness the launching of a 10 storey building for distance learning.
