Former Tanzania President Dr. Ali Hassan Mwinyi has commended the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) for going international in the provision of higher education as well as their contribution in promoting Kiswahili by writing books on essential issues in Kiswahili and translating English books into Kiswahili.
The former president gave the remarks in Dar es Salaam yesterday when launching two books one being an eight- chaptered book, co-authored by various authors from the university titled “20 years of bridging the education gap in Tanzania and beyond through open and distance learning” during celebrations of marking the on-going 20th anniversary of the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) scheduled to reach its climax on October 27th this year.
“I am told that this book has been written by lectures of OUT, and it has not only penned down the history of OUT but also the history of Tanzania open and free education in since the colonial ere,” said Mwinyi.
He also challenged academicians in the country as well as other intellectuals to write more books in Kiswahili on essential matters touching the majority in the country so as to broaden the knowledge base of the intended majority especially in fighting diseases, ignorance and poverty.
He also commended all those who took part in writing the eight chaptered book, and applauded OUT for having expanded their branches beyond boarders.
He particularly commended Professor Tolly Mbwette the vice chancellor for OUT for not only writing a book on the dangers of drinking unsafe water but also for translating the book in Swahili.
